Is life better when we live within the rules?

A wallflower, the belle of the ball, an overbearing chaperone and the male object of everyone’s desire meet in an imaginary dance hall where the cut of your dress and the way that you move can mean social success or suicide.

Don’ts for Dancers is a bold new work which takes the 1925 book of the same name as its inspiration.  The book outlines a set of rules for how to be a good dancer:  in the show etiquette and expectations surrounding social dancing are explored in playful, furious, thought provoking and abstract ways. When conformity is essential, the unexpected consequences of stepping outside the boundaries start to reveal themselves…

Choreographer Nerida Matthaei teams up with musician Nicole Canham, and Leah Shelton and Alex Bryce in this hour-long live music and dance piece that is part- time capsule, part- commentary on past and present attitudes to breaking or living within the rules.
